Nigeria Records 40 Confirmed Mpox Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced on Friday that the country has recorded 40 confirmed cases of mpox out of 830 suspected cases.

This revelation came during a joint briefing with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Abuja.

NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris stated that despite the increasing number of cases, no deaths have been reported.

He attributed this to the swift establishment of an Emergency Operations Centre and an Incident Management System.

Idris emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance and laboratory capabilities, particularly in the South-South and South-East regions.

He also highlighted the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the disease, its symptoms, and preventive measures.

The WHO Country Representative, Dr. Walter Mulombo, urged continued vigilance in monitoring microbes that could potentially cause mpox, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and early detection.

With the United States Government pledging to donate mpox vaccines to Nigeria, the country is taking proactive steps to combat the outbreak and protect public health.
