As the controversy on the  seizure of  Presidential  jets rages on, Ibikunle Amosun and Gbenga Daniel, two erstwhile helmsmen of Ogun State, have thrown their weight behind the Federal Government’s quest to reclaim  from a French judicial authority.

The jets, with a staggering value of $100m, were impounded following a court ruling in favor of Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Company Limited, a Chinese conglomerate that had partnered with the Ogun State Government in 2007 to birth the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone Company.
The former governors have denounced Zhongshan as a scammer, disputing the company’s claims to compensation and vowing to support the Federal Government’s efforts to recover the seized assets.

Amosun, in a statement he signed on Saturday, said Nigeria should not give Zhongfu  any listening ear, as doing so would amount to encouraging “an unlawful entity without locus standi to appropriate our common patrimony.”

Hear him, “At different levels, government is a continuum and the various segments of events leading to this unfortunate situation occurred before, during and after our administration.

“Our administration assumed office on May 29, 2011. Very shortly after we took office, two different sets of Chinese companies, Messrs China Africa Investment FXE and Zhongfu International Investment FXE laid claims to management rights over the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone.

“The business dispute and rivalry between the Chinese concerns soon became fierce, grounded seamless business activities and threatened public peace and safety within the zone and neighboring communities.

“There were claims and counter-claims as to who between the two was the lawful representative of the original joint venturer, Guangdong Province, China, and consequentially who had the right to manage the zone.

“Zhongfu International Investment FXE, pretending to be a concerned and genuine tenant and zone stakeholder, volunteered very damaging and destructive information about the official representatives of Guangdong Province, the Joint Venturer and lawful zone managers, China Africa Investment FXE, and subsequently requested to be appointed as interim zone managers.”

Senator Amosun revealed that on March 15, 2012, the state government temporarily appointed Zhongfu as the zone manager to prevent unauthorized developments while a thorough investigation was conducted. However, it was later uncovered that Zhongfu’s allegations against China Africa were entirely fabricated. The former governor alleged that Zhongfu’s true intentions were to discredit China Africa and illegitimately acquire state-owned assets from Guangdong Province in China. Following a diplomatic note from the Chinese Government on March 11, 2016, the state government confirmed that China Africa was, in fact, the legitimate investor.

“After due consultation with the relevant organs of government, we gave effect to the request of the Chinese government.

“We do recall that Zhongfu International Investment FXE approached Nigerian courts in different jurisdictions to ventilate its legal and business rights. They lost all their four cases in court.

“We also consulted with and took advice from the State Security Services and the supervising agency, NEPZA, on the best way to proceed. Accordingly, we served Zhongfu International Investment FXE with a formal termination notice dated 27 May, 2016,” he noted.

Meanwhile,Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District, has offered to provide crucial documents to support the Federal Government’s case against the Chinese company. He also pledged to assist President Bola Tinubu in finding a diplomatic solution to the issue, which he described as a “national embarrassment.” Daniel emphasized that the matter is of utmost importance, involving the collective assets and commonwealth of Nigeria, and therefore warrants the concern and attention of all Nigerians.

“We need to also appreciate that this matter is before various courts in several countries and it is subjudice for anyone to speak on them.

“However, let us emphasise once again that the Ogun/Guangdong Free Trade Zone project still exists and several Nigerians are working there as we write, just as there are several companies still doing their legitimate businesses,” he added.
