NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Substandard Bread, Other Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to manufacturers of regulated products in Nigeria over the production and sale of fake and substandard items.

The agency’s Southwest Coordinator, Mrs. Roseline Ajayi, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan on Friday. Ajayi expressed deep concern over the increasing prevalence of substandard products in the market, including bread that fails to meet laboratory standards.

According to NAFDAC, many bread producers are substituting sugar with saccharine due to the rising cost of sugar. This unhealthy practice poses significant risks to consumers’ health.

“We understand the economic challenges facing businesses, but the health of Nigerians cannot be compromised,” Ajayi emphasized. “NAFDAC will not relent in its efforts to ensure that only safe and quality products are available to the public.”

The agency also revealed that some patent medicine dealers are selling restricted and unregistered drugs, while others are violating packaging and storage regulations.

To address these issues, NAFDAC is seeking increased collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen its regulatory oversight. The agency aims to intensify its surveillance activities to protect consumers from harmful products.
