Officials ‘Likely Targets’ In Washington Dinner Gun Attack

A night meant for political satire and media engagement turned chaotic after gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, forcing the emergency evacuation of US President Donald Trump and senior officials.

Authorities say the president and his team were the “likely” targets of the attack, which unfolded at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night.

The suspected gunman, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was arrested after allegedly opening fire near a security checkpoint. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said early findings point to a targeted attack on government officials, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation leading investigations.

Secret Service agents quickly moved Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice-President JD Vance to safety after shots rang out around 20:35 local time.

The White House described the incident as an “assassination attempt,” while Trump later praised security forces and urged calm. The suspect, reportedly armed with firearms and knives, was subdued after an exchange with law enforcement. One injured officer has since been treated and discharged.

Investigators are examining writings linked to the suspect, said to express hostility toward government figures, while a family member reportedly alerted authorities before the attack.

The event was halted and rescheduled, as global leaders including Keir Starmer and Mark Carney condemned the incident.

The shooting adds to growing concerns over security at high-profile political gatherings in the United States.
