Mali Defence Minister Killed In Car Bomb As Fighting Escalates

Mali has been thrown into deeper crisis following the reported killing of its defence minister, Sadio Camara, in a deadly car bomb attack near the capital, Bamako.

Family sources said Camara, his wife and two grandchildren died when an explosive device detonated at his residence in the town of Kita, marking one of the most significant blows to the country’s military leadership in recent years.

The assassination comes amid a second day of intense clashes across Mali, driven by coordinated offensives from Tuareg separatists linked to the Azawad Liberation Front and Islamist fighters affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin.

Heavy fighting has been reported in strategic northern and central areas, including Kidal, Gao and Sévaré. Rebel groups claim they have taken control of Kidal and announced an agreement for Malian forces and their Russian allies to withdraw.

The Malian army had only regained Kidal in 2023 with backing from fighters linked to the Wagner Group, ending years of separatist dominance in the region.

Despite official assurances that the situation remains under control, residents across affected cities have described widespread fear, trauma, and uncertainty as explosions and sustained gunfire continue to shake communities.

The resurgence of violence is raising fresh concerns about stability in the Sahel, where insurgencies and political unrest have continued to challenge governments and regional security efforts.
