Doctors Say Health Sector Failed Nigerians In 2025

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has described 2025 as a lost year for Nigeria’s health sector, citing weak leadership, policy drift and worsening access to care.

The association said poor pay, inadequate welfare and limited training continued to drive health workers abroad, while strikes and high costs denied many Nigerians basic healthcare.

Although hospital infrastructure improved slightly, the NMA said staffing, funding and equipment remained inadequate.

It urged the Federal Government to prioritise healthcare in 2026 by improving workers’ welfare, expanding health insurance and increasing funding to revive the sector.
