President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed into law the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoni, Rivers State.
The move marks a decisive step towards addressing historical grievances while fostering education, growth, and sustainable development.
Speaking at the State House, Abuja, during the signing ceremony, Tinubu underscored the significance of the new institution in promoting environmental justice, education, and national development.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education, and sustainable development.
Ogoni has long been at the forefront of development and agitation, suffering environmental degradation. It is only fitting that we bring knowledge into that environment,” he stated.
The President emphasized that the establishment of the university extends beyond academia, serving as a reaffirmation of his administration’s commitment to the Ogoni people, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria as a whole.
Acknowledging the Ogoni people’s longstanding advocacy for environmental restoration, Tinubu described the university as a center of excellence that will equip young Nigerians with the skills needed to tackle contemporary environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions, and contribute to economic sustainability.
“By signing this bill into law, we are taking a decisive step towards addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and prosperity,” Tinubu noted.
Tinubu expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for passing the bill, acknowledging the role of lawmakers, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House, and various committees, in making the legislation a reality.
He also commended the Ogoni delegation for their peaceful and persistent advocacy for justice and environmental restoration.
“Your steadfast advocacy for justice and your peaceful approach to securing the confidence of our people is commendable. I assure you, it will be rewarding,” he stated.
The President urged all stakeholders—including traditional institutions, academia, the private sector, and young Nigerians—to embrace the university as a symbol of knowledge, unity, and progress.
“Together, we will ensure that it not only fulfills its mandate but also stands as a catalyst for transformational development across the country,” Tinubu concluded.
