The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down the notorious Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State, for the second time in two years as part of a major crackdown on counterfeit products.
In an operation titled “Operation Clean Up Aba,” NAFDAC uncovered and seized fake and substandard food and beverages valued at over ₦5 billion.
Known as a hub for Africa’s largest counterfeit beverage cartel, the Cemetery Market has been linked to the production of fake alcoholic drinks, carbonated beverages, and other food items.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described the raid as “the most decisive action in the market’s history” and emphasized its importance for public health.
“This is a significant step toward curbing the circulation of counterfeit products and protecting public health,” Adeyeye stated.

The agency discovered over 240 illegal factories manufacturing fake products under unhygienic conditions.
These factories used harmful chemicals, recycled bottles, and contaminated water to produce fake versions of popular brands such as Hennessy, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt.
“These criminals use unsafe ingredients like saccharin, coloring agents, and chemicals unsuitable for human consumption. They even substitute real fruits and grapes with cheaper starches and sugars in alcoholic drinks,” Adeyeye explained.
NAFDAC also destroyed over 1,500 cartons of fake products on-site and identified warehouses stockpiling expired items for revalidation.
The agency commended Governor Alex Otti and the Aba South local government for their support in the operation.
Nigerians were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious products to NAFDAC.
“This operation underscores our commitment to safeguarding public health and eliminating fake products from the market,” Adeyeye concluded.
