The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Yemi Cardoso, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening Africa’s financial resilience through key economic reforms.

Speaking at the 5th African Union Extraordinary Session on Finance and Economic Integration in Abuja, Cardoso outlined measures aimed at fostering stability and growth across Nigeria and the continent.

Key reforms include the adoption of a unified exchange rate system, the removal of fuel subsidies, and the recapitalization of deposit money banks.

These initiatives, he noted, are designed to enhance transparency, boost investor confidence, and prepare the financial sector to withstand economic shocks.

Cardoso also emphasized Nigeria’s alignment with the African Union’s “Agenda 2063,” which envisions the establishment of the African Monetary Institute and the operationalization of the African Financing Stability Mechanism.

Both initiatives aim to drive regional integration and bolster financial resilience across the continent.

Finance Minister Wale Edun, represented by Aisha Umar, added that collective action is crucial for Africa to overcome challenges such as poverty, dependence on aid, and periodic debt crises.

He stressed the importance of building robust economic systems to reduce reliance on external assistance.

The session was attended by high-profile figures, including representatives from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank, and the African Union, underscoring the continent’s commitment to sustainable economic growth.
