House Of Reps Summon Ministers Over $2 Billion Renewable Energy Fund

Nigeria’s House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy has summoned key ministers, including those overseeing Agriculture and Food Security, Science and Technology, and Budget and Economic Planning, to appear for an investigative hearing. 
The committee, chaired by Afam Ogene, is probing the utilization of over $2 billion in investments and grants allocated for renewable energy projects since 2015.
The inquiry comes amid concerns that despite substantial funds directed toward the sector, Nigeria’s power supply remains inadequate.

The hearing, scheduled for November 5 and 6, 2024, is expected to address transparency and accountability in handling these funds.
At the hearing’s outset on Tuesday, the absence of the ministers, who sent lower-ranking representatives instead, frustrated lawmakers. 
Committee Chair Ogene expressed disappointment, urging the ministers to appear in person. 
He reminded them of the National Assembly’s constitutional authority to summon public officials.
Additional officials expected to testify include representatives from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Accountant General’s Office, and private stakeholders like Union Bank and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.
