“Tinubu Refused To Sign Peace Accord As Presidential Candidate” – Bishop Kukah Reveals

Bishop Matthew Kukah, a prominent cleric and convener of the National Peace Committee, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu declined to sign a peace accord during his 2023 presidential campaign.

Kukah made this revelation on Sunday in Benin City at the Edo Election Security Townhall.

According to Kukah, the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, cannot coerce presidential candidates into signing the peace pact, which has become a standard electoral practice over the past decade.

Kukah emphasized that the failure of political parties and their candidates to sign the peace accord sends a negative message to Nigerians, which the opposition can readily capitalize on.

He cited the 2019 election, where Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, initially refused to sign the accord but later did so after facing criticism.

Kukah expressed disappointment that Tinubu’s refusal to sign the peace accord went unchallenged by the opposition.

He clarified that the committee would not take legal action against those who decline to sign the accord, but stressed the importance of signing it to demonstrate commitment to peaceful elections.
