Maritime Workers Implement N200,000 Minimum Wage

A significant breakthrough for maritime workers in Nigeria has been achieved with the approval of a N200,000 minimum wage for employees in the shipping industry.

The Shipping Agencies, Clearing, and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) formalized this agreement during a signing ceremony organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council with the support of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. This landmark decision marks the culmination of a 20-year struggle for improved working conditions in the sector.

Mrs Boma Alabi (SAN), President of SACFEA, emphasized the significance of this new minimum wage, highlighting that it would set a new standard for employee benefits across all industries in Nigeria. The agreement establishes a comprehensive set of minimum conditions of service for workers employed in various shipping-related roles.
