The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has unveiled the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO), a new vehicle designed to transform the management of Nigeria’s renewable energy infrastructure and unlock fresh investment in the sector.

The REA Managing Director, Dr Abba Aliyu while speaking at the launch of RAMCO, described the initiative as a major shift in how the country manages and derives long-term value from renewable energy assets deployed across public institutions and communities.

He said RAMCO was not merely another government institution but a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created to ensure that billions of naira worth of renewable energy infrastructure already deployed across the country remained functional, sustainable and capable of generating further value.

“Today marks an important step in how we think about the future of Nigeria’s renewable energy infrastructure,” he said.

According to him, government, through the REA and other institutions, has over the years deployed significant renewable energy infrastructure across schools, healthcare facilities, communities and other public assets.

However, he stressed that building the infrastructure was only half the battle, with effective management and sustainability now critical to protecting the investments and ensuring Nigerians continue to benefit from them.

He said RAMCO would provide “a dedicated institutional framework” for managing the assets strategically, improving their sustainability, unlocking capital recycling and creating opportunities for increased private-sector participation.

REA, MOFI, InfraCorp Join Forces

The REA boss expressed satisfaction that the initiative was being driven in partnership with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and InfraCorp, with the support of the Ministers of Power, Finance, Education and Health.

He said the broad government collaboration underscored the strategic importance of renewable energy infrastructure to sectors far beyond electricity generation.

“The collaboration reflects the fact that renewable energy assets cut across sectors, and their impact goes far beyond electricity alone,” he said.

The initiative is expected to provide a more coordinated approach to managing renewable energy installations deployed in critical public institutions, while creating a framework through which private capital can participate in their expansion and sustainability.

‘The Real Work Begins Now’

The REA Managing Director, however, warned that the launch of RAMCO should not be mistaken for the completion of the assignment.

He said the immediate priority would be a detailed assessment of renewable energy assets that could be transferred under the RAMCO framework.

The evaluation, he explained, would examine the condition and performance of the assets, their revenue-generating potential, operational requirements and the interventions required to make them financially and technically sustainable.

“For me, that is where the real work begins,” he declared.

He stressed that Nigeria could no longer afford to simply deploy renewable energy infrastructure without putting equally strong systems in place to maintain, operate and expand the assets.

“We have spent years building these assets. Now, we have to build the systems that will ensure they continue working, growing and creating value for Nigerians,” he said.

With RAMCO now launched, the REA leadership signalled that the next phase would focus on turning Nigeria’s existing renewable energy infrastructure into sustainable assets capable of attracting investment, supporting public services and delivering lasting value.

“And I am excited about what comes next,” the REA MD said, adding: “The work continues.”
