Hull City have marked their return to the Premier League with a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium.

The newly promoted side produced a dominant first-half display to secure all three points, leaving Michael Carrick’s Manchester United side frustrated in their league opener.

Hull took the lead through Semi Ajayi, who reacted quickest inside the box to fire home from a corner and give the hosts their first top-flight goal since 2017.

The Tigers doubled their advantage before the break when new signing Nobel Mendy rose highest to head home from a free-kick.

United enjoyed greater possession after the interval but struggled to turn it into meaningful chances, with Hull’s defence remaining organised and disciplined.

Marcus Rashford was introduced in the second half, making his first Premier League appearance since 2024, but he was unable to inspire a comeback.

Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis and defender John Egan were among those who helped keep United at bay as the visitors struggled to find a way through.

The result gives Hull a dream start to their first Premier League campaign since the 2016-17 season.

Hull secured promotion after finishing sixth in the Championship and beating Middlesbrough in the playoff final at Wembley, with Oli McBurnie scoring a dramatic 95th-minute winner.

After the defeat, Carrick admitted United still had work to do but insisted the result would not derail the team.

“We have a bit to improve on. It was never going to be perfect today,” Carrick told TNT Sports.

He added that United had opportunities but lacked the spark needed to create more chances or finish the ones they had.

For Hull, however, the afternoon ended in celebration as they began their Premier League comeback with a memorable victory over one of England’s biggest clubs.
