The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dismissed reports claiming that he asked Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increase until after the 2027 general elections, describing the allegation as false and misleading.
Obi, in a statement on Tuesday, said the report did not reflect his position, stressing that he holds the nation’s security forces, particularly members of the Nigerian Army, in the highest regard.
“I never said military should reject salary increase,” Obi declared, urging Nigerians to disregard what he described as a misleading report.
He said his position has consistently been that security personnel must be adequately equipped, motivated and protected to effectively defend the country.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he said.
Obi said his concerns about the welfare of troops were driven by incidents in which soldiers had been left vulnerable while confronting insurgents.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” he said.
Obi Pledges Soldiers’ Welfare As Presidential Priority
The NDC presidential candidate said the welfare, safety, resources and dignity of Nigeria’s armed forces would receive priority if he is elected president.
“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority,” Obi said.
According to him, security personnel who risk their lives to protect the nation must not be treated as an afterthought by government.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” he added.
Obi vowed that under his leadership, situations in which military personnel are left exposed to danger without adequate protection would be eliminated.
“Under my leadership, scenarios where our servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril will be eradicated,” he said.
He consequently urged Nigerians to disregard the report, insisting that he remains focused on presenting what he described as a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
