The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has intensified efforts to promote digital safety in Nigeria with a public awareness roadshow in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

The campaign, themed “Together for a Safer Cyberspace,” seeks to encourage individuals, businesses and institutions to take collective responsibility for protecting themselves against online threats and cybercrime.

NITDA, through its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team, CERRT.NG, said the initiative was aimed at equipping Nigerians with practical knowledge to identify and prevent cyberattacks as digital threats become increasingly sophisticated.

The agency expressed concern over emerging threats powered by artificial intelligence, including deepfake impersonation, voice cloning and fraudulent QR-code attacks, commonly known as quishing.

These methods can be used by cybercriminals to impersonate trusted individuals, deceive unsuspecting victims and steal sensitive information or gain unauthorised access to accounts.

As part of the awareness campaign, NITDA officials took the message to the streets of Abuja, distributing flyers containing nine essential cyber hygiene tips and engaging members of the public on practical ways to stay safe online.

The agency advised Nigerians to use strong, unique passwords for their accounts and activate multi-factor authentication to strengthen protection against unauthorised access.

It also urged users to keep their devices and applications updated, avoid sharing personal identification numbers (PINs) and one-time passwords (OTPs), and remain vigilant against voice phishing, known as vishing, and SMS-based phishing, known as smishing.

Other recommended measures include securing home Wi-Fi networks, regularly backing up important data and limiting the amount of personal information shared online.

NITDA stressed that these basic precautions remain the first line of defence against cyber threats, adding that cybersecurity should not be left exclusively to technology professionals but embraced by everyone who uses digital platforms.

The agency said collective vigilance and responsible online behaviour were essential to building a safer and more resilient digital environment in Nigeria.
