The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for about 25 days to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing works.
The proposed closure is scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation, following the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
FAAN disclosed this in a press release issued on Thursday, October 8, by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.
The authority said the rehabilitation became necessary to restore the runway to a safer operational condition, particularly ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger traffic and flight operations during the Christmas season.
According to FAAN, the planned intervention will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections of the runway.
The project will also include a runway extension designed to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region increases.
FAAN said the expansion would improve passenger comfort and facilitate a smoother travel experience for airport users.
The authority advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements.
It added that consultations with relevant stakeholders would continue, while the confirmed closure and reopening dates would be communicated to the public once finalised.
FAAN appealed for the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users, stressing that the planned works were part of its commitment to ensuring safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
