A former governorship aspirant and political ally of ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Dr Sokonte Davies, has defected from the African Democratic Congress to the All Progressives Congress.
Davies, who was a founding member of the APC before joining the ADC, said his return was informed by what he described as the ruling party’s stronger prospects for advancing the interests of his people and contributing to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The development comes ahead of the 2027 elections in Rivers State. Davies was pictured with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike after his return to the APC.
In a statement titled “Return to the Progressive Family: My Decision to Rejoin the All Progressives Congress,” Davies said he reached the decision after consultations with his family, political associates, constituents and elders.
He said he had reassessed the political platform through which he could best serve his people, contribute to Rivers State’s development and support efforts aimed at national stability.
Davies said his return represented a “homecoming,” recalling his role as a foundational member of the APC and his belief in the party’s founding principles, including democracy, social justice, true federalism, inclusive growth and respect for the rule of law.
While acknowledging his time in the ADC, he said he held no grudge against the party or its members, describing politics as “a marketplace of ideas” where disagreements could occur without hostility.
He thanked the ADC leadership for the opportunity to serve and pledged to remain a committed APC member while working with party leaders and stakeholders at the ward, local government, state and national levels.
Davies also urged his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, calling on those who share his political ideals to join the APC and contribute to its development agenda.
He expressed appreciation to Wike for what he described as a warm reception and thanked APC National Vice-Chairman Victor Giadom for facilitating his return, as well as party elders and members for their support.
