The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a blistering attack on former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, mocking his claims of financial hardship and inability to afford medication for his late mother.
The APC, in a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, CON, described Amaechi as a man who had “freeloaded” at the highest levels of public office for decades, questioning how he could become financially distressed only three years after leaving government.
The party began by commiserating with Amaechi over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, praying that her soul would continue to rest in peace.
But the condolence quickly turned into a searing political broadside.
The APC sarcastically prayed that Amaechi, a former two-term Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor and two-term Minister of Transportation, would find employment in his hometown of Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area, that would enable him to feed himself and afford medication for his family.
“We also pray for excellent health of mind and body for her son, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi… who could not afford medications for his mother’s treatment,” Morka said.
The APC seized on Amaechi’s previous remarks about his financial struggles, including his claim that he had become so broke that his wife was feeding him.
The party also referenced his reported statement that he could not afford medication for his 89-year-old mother before her death
“Rotimi Amaechi’s uncanny confessions must not be missed,” Morka said, adding that the former governor had spent four decades occupying lucrative public offices.
According to the APC spokesman, Amaechi had enjoyed political power at the highest levels and was never publicly known to have struggled to provide for himself or his family while in office.
“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family,” the statement said.
Morka then questioned Amaechi’s capacity to remain economically productive outside government.
“If Amaechi is not struggling with some kind of Peter Pan syndrome, then he must be a loafer, aimless and irresponsible for his inability to be productive and earn a living outside the patronage of public office,” he said.
The APC further accused Amaechi of seeking the vice presidency in 2027 to return to what it described as a lifestyle dependent on public resources.
“The same Rotimi Amaechi now asks Nigerians to make him vice president come 2027 so he can continue leeching on public treasury and keep the predatory lifestyle he has grown accustomed to,” Morka said.
Delivering its sharpest jab, the ruling party declared that the presidency could not become a personal welfare platform for the ADC candidate.
“The presidency is not a soup kitchen, and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” Morka declared.
The APC concluded by arguing that Amaechi’s own public statements had provided the strongest case against his bid for the nation’s second-highest office.
“There can be no better speaker of Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of vice president than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the party said.
