NNPC Ltd Backs $800m Ima Project, Says Nigeria’s Gas Sector Back For Investment

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has thrown its weight behind the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Ima Gas Project, describing the development as a major vote of confidence in Nigeria’s upstream gas sector and the investment reforms of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

The project, being developed offshore in OMLs 112 and 117 by AMNI International in partnership with TotalEnergies, is expected to produce about 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day at peak, providing critical feedgas for the expansion of Nigeria LNG Limited’s Train 7.

NNPC Ltd., in a statement issued on Friday by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said the FID represented a significant milestone in efforts to unlock Nigeria’s vast gas resources for industrial and economic development.

The Train 7 expansion is expected to increase NLNG’s production capacity at Bonny Island from 22 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa, further strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global LNG market.

Reacting to the investment decision, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the project as “a decisive vote of confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector and in the bold reforms” that have reshaped the investment environment.

According to Ojulari, the reforms have helped create more competitive terms and a more predictable environment for investors seeking to deploy capital into Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

The FID was facilitated by the Presidential Directives issued in 2024, which introduced fiscal incentives for non-associated gas projects, streamlined contracting processes and reduced development costs.

With Ima now reaching FID, NNPC Ltd. said it has become the fourth major gas project to reach the investment decision stage under the Tinubu administration, following the Iseni, Ubeta and HI gas projects.

The company said the latest development demonstrated that policy reforms, regulatory support and industry collaboration were beginning to translate into concrete investment in Nigeria’s gas sector.

NNPC Ltd. also highlighted the collaboration between AMNI, TotalEnergies and the Nigerian financial sector, describing the partnership involving an indigenous operator, an international energy company and domestic capital as a model that could be replicated across future gas developments.

The company said such partnerships would be critical to unlocking the capital required to develop Nigeria’s abundant gas reserves, while strengthening local participation in major energy projects.

Beyond gas production, NNPC Ltd. said the Ima project would contribute to industrialisation, job creation and long-term economic growth, as the company pledged to continue working with the Federal Government, regulators and industry stakeholders to sustain the current investment momentum.

The project comes amid renewed efforts by the Nigerian government and industry regulators to accelerate gas development and position the sector as a major driver of economic growth, energy security and industrialisation.

NNPC Ltd. said it remained committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s gas resources were developed and deployed to deliver greater value to the country and its citizens.
