2027: I’ll Ensure Niger Delta Benefits From Its Wealth — Obi

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has promised to ensure that the Niger Delta benefits more directly from the oil wealth generated in the region if elected in 2027.

Obi made the pledge in Asaba, Delta State, during the inauguration of the NDC campaign headquarters in the state.

He said the region had contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economy but had not received corresponding development, particularly in infrastructure.

“The days you don’t see the impact of your wealth are gone. Niger Delta must see the impact of the wealth it is creating for the nation,” Obi said.

He also criticised the condition of the East-West Road and other federal roads in the region, promising greater transparency in the management of public resources.

According to him, his administration would ensure that Nigerians know how public funds are spent, adding that better management of resources would be used to improve development in the oil-producing region.

Obi also promised to prioritise healthcare and make the country’s health system more functional. He said political office holders would be encouraged to seek medical treatment in Nigeria, except where overseas treatment was required through referral.

The NDC candidate further pledged to spend his holidays in Nigeria if elected, as part of efforts to promote confidence in the country’s institutions and services.

NDC governorship candidate in Delta State, Chris Iyovwaye, and Delta Central senatorial candidate, Ovie Omo-Agege, also expressed support for Obi’s candidacy ahead of the 2027 elections.
