Nigeria’s Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has proposed compulsory military training for all Nigerians, saying the experience would help citizens better understand the sacrifices and responsibilities of members of the Armed Forces.

Musa made the proposal while speaking on the African Leadership Podcast hosted by Ken Giami.

The former Chief of Defence Staff said military training would expose Nigerians to the realities of endurance, discipline and sacrifice, including the ability to continue despite hunger, exhaustion and lack of sleep.

He said such an experience would give citizens a different perspective on life and deepen their appreciation of the role of the military in protecting the country.

“Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. I can tell you for free, it will give you a different perspective about life. You will now understand what it means to stay hungry, what it means to walk in days without sleep,” Musa said.

He added that military personnel often endure difficult conditions and put their lives at risk in the course of protecting the nation.

Musa also expressed concern over criticism directed at members of the Armed Forces, arguing that citizens should better understand the sacrifices made by soldiers in the line of duty.
