State Police: Osun Assembly Approves Constitutional Amendment

The Osun State House of Assembly has approved a resolution supporting the creation of State Police as part of ongoing constitutional amendment efforts aimed at allowing states to establish their own police forces.

The resolution was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session of the Assembly following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Mr Babajide Kofoworola, and seconded by Mr Tajudeen Adeyemi.

The development follows the passage of a State Police Creation Amendment Bill by the National Assembly on June 24, 2026, which was subsequently transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration.

During the sitting, lawmakers approved the proposed amendment and directed that the resolution be forwarded to the National Assembly for further legislative action.

The Speaker of the Osun Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, said the approved amendment would be communicated to the National Assembly as part of the constitutional review process.

The proposed amendment requires approval by a required number of state legislatures before returning to the National Assembly for final consideration.

If completed and assented to by the President, the constitutional amendment would provide the legal framework for the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.

The move is part of wider discussions around policing reforms, security management and the structure of law enforcement across the country.
