Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their Premier League goal drought on Saturday but suffered another disappointing defeat after Aston Villa secured a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The result extended Tottenham’s difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a league victory after five matches.
Spurs remain on two points after recording two draws and three defeats, a run that has pushed them down to 18th position on the league table.
Aston Villa, managed by Unai Emery, moved up to 15th place with four points after claiming their first Premier League win of the season.
Villa stunned the home crowd by taking a three-goal lead before Tottenham mounted a late fightback.
Johan Manzambi opened the scoring for Villa in first-half stoppage time before Nicolas Jackson doubled the advantage in the 67th minute.
Emiliano Buendia appeared to have sealed the victory when he made it 3-0 in the 79th minute, leaving Spurs facing another heavy defeat.
However, Tottenham responded with a late surge.
Conor Gallagher reduced the deficit in the 86th minute before Jan Paul van Hecke headed home deep into stoppage time to make it 3-2.
The hosts pushed aggressively for an equaliser in the final moments, but Villa held on to secure their first league victory of the campaign.
The defeat continues a frustrating beginning for De Zerbi, who arrived at Tottenham with the task of rebuilding a team that narrowly avoided relegation last season.
Spurs began the season with defeats against Brentford and Newcastle United before consecutive goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Everton.
They also suffered a 3-1 League Cup defeat to Liverpool during the week.
Despite dominating possession with 64 per cent and earning 11 corners compared to Villa’s one, Tottenham were unable to convert their control into points.
Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki played a key role, making five saves as Emery’s side absorbed sustained pressure during the closing stages.
The international break now gives both managers an opportunity to regroup, with Tottenham seeking a turnaround after a difficult opening spell while Villa look to build momentum from their first league win.
