The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised the alarm over the circulation of a suspected counterfeit toothpaste, ORACIRE+ Toothpaste, warning Nigerians that the product is being passed off as the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
The agency issued the warning in Public Alert No. 041/2026, following a formal complaint and market intelligence report indicating the widespread distribution of the suspected counterfeit product in Nigeria.
According to NAFDAC, market surveillance conducted at Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, Lagos, uncovered the product, which closely resembles the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in its packaging and overall presentation.
The agency said the striking similarity could make it difficult for unsuspecting consumers to distinguish the suspected counterfeit product from the genuine toothpaste.
NAFDAC Warns Of Unknown Health Risks
NAFDAC warned that counterfeit personal-care products could fail to meet established quality and safety standards and potentially expose consumers to serious health risks.
“The origin, composition, safety, and quality of the suspected counterfeit product have not been verified,” the agency warned.
The regulator said it had immediately commenced surveillance activities and directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to investigate the availability and distribution of the suspected counterfeit toothpaste in their respective areas.
NAFDAC said appropriate regulatory action would be taken against anyone found involved in the distribution or sale of the suspected counterfeit product.
Consumers Put On Alert
The agency urged consumers, distributors, retailers and healthcare providers to exercise extreme caution when purchasing ORACARE+ Toothpaste, advising them to patronise only reputable and authorised outlets.
Consumers were also urged to carefully examine the packaging and source of supply before purchasing the product.
NAFDAC appealed to members of the public and healthcare providers to report any suspected sale or distribution of ORACIRE+ Toothpaste to the nearest NAFDAC office.
