NOUN Bursar Shot Dead While Returning From Gusau

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.

The university announced Marafa’s death in an official statement issued on Sunday, September 6, 2026, by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi saying the incident occurred on the same day.

According to the university, information available to its management indicated that the Bursar was shot while on his way back from Gusau.

The shocking development has plunged the NOUN community into grief, with the institution describing Marafa as a “distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member” of the university family.

Marafa, who was appointed Bursar of NOUN in September 2026, had served the university in various positions of responsibility and authority, according to the institution.

The university said he discharged his duties with dedication and commitment to the advancement of the institution.

“The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students of the National Open University of Nigeria, regrets to announce the sudden and untimely passing of the University Bursar,” the statement said.

NOUN expressed deep condolences to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and other mourners, praying that Allah would grant them the strength to endure the loss.

The university said details of the burial arrangements would be communicated once released by the family.

It prayed for the forgiveness of Marafa’s shortcomings and his admission into Al-Jannah Firdaus.
