Rüdiger Bids Farewell To Germany After 12 Years With National Team

Germany defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football, two months after making his final appearance for the national team at the 2026 World Cup.

The 33-year-old Real Madrid centre-back leaves the German setup after earning 86 caps for the four-time world champions.

In a statement shared on social media, Rüdiger said he had reflected carefully before deciding to step away from international duty.

“After some time reflecting, the moment has come for me to end my national team career and clear the way for the young generation,” he said.

The defender, who made his Germany debut in 2014, said his focus would now shift fully to club football with Real Madrid, where he remains under contract.

“A new chapter begins for me now, in which I will focus entirely on my club,” Rüdiger added.

Rüdiger began his career in Germany with Stuttgart before moving abroad, representing Roma and later Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2021.

He joined Real Madrid in 2022 and has since won major honours, including the Champions League and La Liga title in 2024.

Despite his individual success, Rüdiger’s international career came during a difficult period for Germany, with the team suffering early World Cup exits in 2018 and 2022 before a last-32 elimination against Paraguay at the 2026 tournament.

Reflecting on his time with the national side, Rüdiger said the journey had been unforgettable despite the disappointment of falling short in recent major competitions.

“Even though the big title eluded us in recent tournaments and we had to endure some painful defeats, this time was an incredibly special chapter for me—one that will shape me forever,” he said.

Rüdiger’s biggest international achievement came in 2017 when Germany won the FIFA Confederations Cup. He now leaves the national team after more than a decade of service, making way for the next generation of German defenders.
