President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered security agencies to sustain the hunt for kidnappers responsible for the abduction of 21 Nigerians, including 15 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, in Kogi State.
The President expressed relief over the safe rescue of the abductees, who were kidnapped last week by criminal elements in the state.
According to Tinubu, a coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) operation involving the military, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and local vigilantes successfully freed all 21 victims from the kidnappers’ hideout in the forests of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Sunday afternoon.
The rescued victims comprise eight males and 13 females, with the NYSC members among those taken captive.
Tinubu disclosed that the victims are currently receiving medical attention before being reunited with their families.
But while the rescue operation has secured the freedom of the victims, the President warned that the operation is far from over, directing security forces to go after the fleeing kidnappers and their accomplices.
“Those responsible will face the full weight of the law, and our security agencies will pursue everyone who aided this crime,” Tinubu declared.
He said his administration would not relent in its campaign against criminal elements, stressing that the government remained committed to creating a country where Nigerians could travel without fear.
The President commended the security personnel involved in the rescue operation, praising them for their courage and determination in locating and freeing the abductees.
“I wholeheartedly commend the combined SAR team for their courage and appreciate families and loved ones of the abductees for their understanding during the ordeals of their loved ones,” he said.
Tinubu also sought to reassure parents and families of NYSC members across the country, saying his administration remained committed to protecting the lives and property of corps members and other Nigerians.
“As I share in the relief and joy of the parents and loved ones of the rescued individuals, I want to once again assure parents and loved ones of our dedicated corps members that my administration remains committed to ensuring the safety of their lives and property, as well as those of other Nigerians,” the President said.
The latest rescue comes amid renewed concerns over kidnapping and attacks along major routes in parts of the country, with the President insisting that security forces must maintain pressure on criminal gangs until those responsible for such crimes are brought to justice.
Tinubu concluded by commending the men and women of Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies for their service and sacrifices in protecting citizens.Headline alternatives:
