Federal Universities in Nigeria: Full List, Accreditation and Admission Guide

Federal universities are the federally funded tier of Nigerian higher education, regulated by the National Universities Commission and spread across all six geopolitical zones. They run degree programmes, scientific research, and professional training.

Each one was created by its own federal legislation and is funded through statutory budget appropriations together with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. That shared funding line is why their academic structures and admission procedures look broadly the same from one campus to the next.

For anyone applying, hiring, or verifying a degree, the route into the system runs through centralised screening handled by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and by each university’s governing council.

Who regulates federal universities

The National Universities Commission is the statutory agency that approves, accredits, and monitors academic programmes at every federal university.

It works under the Federal Ministry of Education and sets uniform benchmarks through the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards framework.

Those standards apply across faculties, from engineering and medical sciences to humanities, management, and the basic sciences, and they cover required infrastructure, faculty to student ratios, and curriculum content.

Institutions that fail a periodic resource verification exercise face sanctions. A programme can lose recognition, or the university’s admission quota can be cut during the central admission cycle.

Day to day administration sits with governing councils appointed by the Federal Government, which handle internal fiscal management and university policy on each campus.

How admission works

Admission runs through the Central Admissions Processing System administered by JAMB, in stages.

Applicants need the prescribed minimum score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination plus five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, from WAEC or NECO sittings.

After the UTME screening, candidates sit a Post-UTME aptitude test or a screening exercise run by the individual university’s senate panel.

Final offers are decided on merit, catchment area allocation, and quotas for educationally less developed states.

Direct Entry candidates come in at 200 level, subject to faculty requirements, on the strength of a Higher National Diploma, a National Diploma, or an Interim Joint Matriculation Board certificate.

The generations of federal universities

The system grew in waves. The first generation institutions were founded before and shortly after independence.

That founding layer includes the University of Ibadan, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, and the University of Lagos.

A second generation followed in the 1970s, widening access into more commercial and regional capitals: the University of Ilorin, the University of Jos, the University of Calabar, the University of Port Harcourt, and Bayero University Kano.

Specialist institutions came next. Universities of technology were set up in Akure, Minna, and Owerri to build technical manpower, and universities of agriculture in Abeokuta, Makurdi, and Umudike.

More recent expansion has added health sciences academies, a university of transportation, and conventional universities founded so that every state of the federation has a federal university presence.

How the campuses and research are funded

Capital spending across the federal university network leans heavily on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

The universities run central libraries linked into global academic research repositories, which is what supports scholarship at Master’s and Doctoral level.

Checking accreditation and validating a degree

Before applying or hiring, check the accreditation status of the specific department in the official NUC directories rather than assuming the whole university clears every programme.

Unapproved satellite campuses, outreach study centres, and degree mills operating without statutory approval get blacklisted by regulatory enforcement units, and the lists are published.

For international use, a federal university degree needs transcript authentication through the university registrar’s office, then legalisation by the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.

Finishing an accredited programme at a recognised federal university is also what makes a graduate eligible for the National Youth Service Corps.
