Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress have built a strong enough record in office to seek another mandate from Nigerians in 2027, insisting that the administration will have “a lot to tell” voters when campaigning begins.
Akpabio said Tinubu inherited a troubled economy in 2023 but had, in his assessment, introduced reforms that improved the financial position of governments and delivered gains across agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy.
He spoke on Monday when members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund, led by its Chairman, Senator Dandutse Mohammed, visited him at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
His Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, disclosed details of the meeting in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.
“The current President has done a lot for Nigerians. He met an economy in shambles,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President claimed that when Tinubu assumed office, 27 states were unable to meet salary and pension obligations, but maintained that the situation had since improved because of the administration’s economic decisions.
“When he came in, 27 states could not pay salaries and pensions, but today, the story has changed because of his reengineering and thinking out of the box,” he said.
The claim about the financial position of the 27 states was presented by Akpabio and was not independently established in the report.
Looking ahead to the 2027 presidential contest, Akpabio predicted that voters would reward Tinubu with a second term.
“In 2027, Nigerians will separate the chaff from the grains and re-elect President Tinubu for a second term in office,” he said.
The Senate President argued that the APC would enter the campaign with what he described as measurable achievements, contrasting Tinubu’s record with that of political opponents seeking to challenge him.
“We have a President who thinks outside the box, bringing about innovation. We will have something to tell Nigerians about the unprecedented achievements of Mr President at the campaign grounds,” Akpabio said.
He added: “Someone who is challenging him cannot even tell us what he did when he was governor.”
Akpabio did not name the opposition politician he was referring to.
The remark nevertheless comes as political parties and leading figures intensify positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, with Tinubu expected to campaign for another four-year term against a potentially consolidated opposition.
Akpabio said the government’s record in the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal management would form major pillars of the ruling party’s re-election campaign.
