2027 Polls: Voters Will Reject Underperforming Governors – Kwankwaso

Several serving governors hoping to secure another term in the 2027 general elections may face rejection at the polls as Nigerians become increasingly dissatisfied with poor governance, Rabiu Kwankwaso has said.

Kwankwaso, the presidential running mate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, said voters were becoming more politically aware and less likely to support political officeholders simply because they control state structures.

Speaking during the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Personality Interview Series in Abuja on Sunday, the former Kano State governor warned political leaders against assuming that incumbency, party machinery or control of government institutions would guarantee victory.

According to him, many governors seeking re-election could be surprised by the outcome of the 2027 elections because voters would increasingly judge candidates by their performance in office.

He said he expects a significant number of governors seeking another term to lose public support.

Kwankwaso also accused some underperforming governors of moving to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the belief that the party’s political strength could improve their chances of retaining power.

He maintained that such calculations might not reflect the mood of the electorate, particularly as Nigerians continue to contend with insecurity, unemployment, poverty and deteriorating public services.

The former governor argued that these challenges could play a major role in shaping voting decisions in 2027, with citizens increasingly willing to vote against incumbents they believe have failed to meet expectations.

Kwankwaso therefore urged political leaders to focus on addressing the needs of their constituents rather than relying on political influence or control of government structures ahead of the elections.
