Comedian and skit maker Josh Alfred, popularly known as Josh2Funny, has defended Nigeria’s emerging wave of “brain-rot” content and semi-literate influencers, arguing that comedy has never been about intellectual sophistication.
The debate gained attention after rapper YCee described the trend as the “Olodo Uprising.” Speaking during an interview with media personality Nedu Wazobia, Josh2Funny said the phenomenon had both positive and negative sides.
He recalled that he was once labelled part of the trend because of his “Mama Felicia” character, which he described as deliberately nonsensical.
“When I started, it was easy for people to call me part of the Olodo Uprising. My character, ‘Mama Felicia’, didn’t make any sense. It wasn’t well-articulated comedy. I was just fooling around,” he said.
Josh2Funny argued that critics who dismiss such content as unintelligent often overlook its economic impact.
“Comedy has never been something that is supposed to be intelligent. The so-called elite might call it ‘stupid’, but it built a million-dollar industry called Nollywood,” he said.
He also blamed social media for amplifying the trend, citing streamer Peller as an example.
According to him, Peller’s public profile and success would have been unlikely without social media, which has also exposed him to criticism and trolling.
He said some people were envious of Peller because he had achieved success without a university degree or what critics consider quality education.
“But what would you have him do? Should he become a thief because he doesn’t know how to speak good English?” Josh2Funny asked.
