Team Nigeria delivered one of its finest performances on the international stage, finishing as the highest-ranked African nation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after securing seventh place on the final medals table with an impressive haul of 24 medals.
The Nigerian contingent amassed 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, cementing its status as Africa’s top-performing country and earning a place among the world’s top 10 nations at the Games.
The final standings, released on the official Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games platform at the conclusion of competition on Sunday, placed Australia at the summit of the medals table with 171 medals comprising 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze.
England finished second with 110 medals (29 gold, 45 silver and 36 bronze), while Canada claimed third place with 62 medals, made up of 19 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze. India and hosts Scotland completed the top five with 39 medals apiece, with India edging Scotland on silver medals won.
New Zealand occupied sixth place with 36 medals (10 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze), narrowly ahead of Nigeria in seventh.
Nigeria’s campaign was highlighted by a series of outstanding individual performances across athletics and para sports.
Esther Nworgu delivered the country’s first gold medal after a dominant display in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.
Sprint hurdler Ezekiel Nathaniel claimed gold in the men’s 400 metres hurdles, while Goodness Nwachukwu shattered her own world record to win gold in the women’s F42 discus throw.
Nigeria’s gold medal haul was further boosted by Idris Riluwan in para powerlifting and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history with his triumph in the men’s shot put event.
Despite battling injury, world record holder Tobi Amusan fought through the pain to secure a bronze medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles, adding to Nigeria’s medal tally.
Nigeria’s 10 gold medals ensured the country finished ahead of every other African nation at the Games.
Jamaica ended eighth on the medals table, followed by Wales in ninth and Malaysia in 10th.
South Africa was the next-best African nation, finishing 11th with 28 medals, including seven gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze. Kenya placed 13th with 12 medals, while Mauritius, Cameroon, Uganda, Namibia, Ghana, Lesotho, Zambia and Gabon were among the other African countries that won medals during the Games.
Team Nigeria’s seventh-place finish underscores the country’s growing strength in athletics, para sports and field events, reinforcing its position as one of the Commonwealth’s leading sporting nations and Africa’s dominant force at the Glasgow 2026 Games.
