Chelsea have opened talks to sign veteran duo Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck as the Premier League giants move to inject experience into a squad built largely around young talent.
The Blues are in discussions with Brentford over the signing of 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson, while negotiations are also underway to bring Danny Welbeck from Brighton to Stamford Bridge.
Henderson, who has one year remaining on his Brentford contract, could leave on a free transfer, with the club reportedly willing to allow the former Liverpool captain to depart without demanding a transfer fee.
Chelsea are also optimistic of reaching an agreement for Welbeck, who is said to be eager to make the move despite having recently extended his contract with Brighton until the end of the 2026-27 season.
The move signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy after years of focusing heavily on recruiting young players.
Influential co-owner Behdad Eghbali admitted earlier this year that the club’s youth-first recruitment policy required a “tweak,” prompting the search for seasoned professionals capable of adding leadership and experience to the dressing room.
Welbeck enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career last term, scoring a personal-best 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton. Since joining the Seagulls from Watford in 2020, the former England striker has netted 51 goals in 201 matches.
Brighton declined to comment on the reports linking the striker with Chelsea.
Henderson, meanwhile, featured 34 times in all competitions for Brentford last season after arriving from Ajax.
The midfielder also made a substitute appearance for England at the FIFA World Cup before suffering a broken arm after falling into advertising hoardings while celebrating England’s last-16 victory over Mexico.
If completed, the double swoop would represent a notable change in Chelsea’s transfer philosophy, with the club looking to blend proven experience with its emerging young stars ahead of the new campaign.
