The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving 70 per cent digital literacy across Nigeria by 2027, unveiling fresh partnerships and capacity-building initiatives aimed at expanding digital inclusion, particularly among women.

The agency announced its latest collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) during a meeting at its headquarters in Abuja, where both organisations agreed to formalise their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Representing the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the agency’s Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, Dr Aristotle Onumo, outlined NITDA’s multi-pronged strategy to accelerate digital literacy across the country.

According to Onumo, the agency is leveraging the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to train 80 digital literacy champions in every stream of each batch annually, with the goal of reaching 10 million Nigerians within one year and 30 million over three years, particularly in the informal sector through the corps’ presence in all 774 local government areas.

He added that NITDA is also strengthening digital skills within the public sector, revealing that nearly 600,000 federal civil servants have already enrolled on the agency’s online learning platform.

Onumo further disclosed that the agency is working with the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to integrate digital literacy into school curricula, with a pilot programme already underway at Nasarawa State University.

Speaking on the partnership with NAWOJ, he said women journalists would play a crucial role in driving digital inclusion at the grassroots.

“Partnering with NAWOJ will help us reach women groups across the federation,” Onumo said, adding that trained women journalists would serve as key multipliers in expanding digital literacy nationwide.

Both organisations agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding that will define the objectives, deliverables and implementation timelines for the partnership.

NITDA also accepted NAWOJ’s invitation to participate in the association’s forthcoming summit and, in turn, invited the association to the Digital Nigeria International Conference, scheduled to hold from November 10 to 12, 2026.

The collaboration forms part of NITDA’s gender-responsive strategy under its Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), which targets at least 40 per cent gender-focused programme delivery while advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
