The Federal Government has launched an ambitious digital teacher training programme aimed at equipping at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders across Nigeria with cutting-edge digital skills, artificial intelligence knowledge and modern teaching techniques, in a renewed push to transform learning outcomes nationwide.
The three-day Master Training Workshop, which commenced on Tuesday, is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Government of Japan, UNESCO-International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), the Pan-African University (PAU) and Castalia Co. Ltd. under the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.
The initiative places a strong focus on empowering female school leaders while expanding access to continuous professional development through mobile-based learning.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on behalf of the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, the Director of Colleges of Education, Dr. Uchenna Uba, described the programme as a significant step toward improving teacher quality and accelerating digital innovation in Nigeria’s education sector.
According to him, the workshop aligns with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which seeks to enhance the quality of teaching and improve learning outcomes through technology-driven reforms.
“This initiative marks a major milestone in advancing teacher quality, digital innovation and improved learning outcomes under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative,” Uba said.
He noted that participants would be equipped with practical skills in digital literacy, Artificial Intelligence in Education, gender-responsive pedagogy, mental health, learner-centred teaching methods and the use of the GOKU Mobile Learning Platform.
The Federal Government disclosed that the programme is expected to create a ripple effect, with the trained master trainers cascading the knowledge to at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders across the country.
In a major boost to the project, the Government of Japan is investing about US$1 million to support implementation, while development partners donated 40 tablets and two edge computing devices to facilitate nationwide deployment.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology, innovation and strategic international partnerships to ensure every Nigerian child has access to inclusive, equitable and quality education.
The workshop is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and its development partners to strengthen teacher capacity and accelerate the digital transformation of Nigeria’s education system.
