FG Halts Planned WAEC, NECO Fee Increase Pending Consultations

The Federal Government has stepped back from its proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 WAEC and NECO examinations, opting instead for wider consultations after the plan sparked public concern.

The Ministry of Education announced on Monday that the June 18 circular conveying the adjustment has been withdrawn, putting the proposed rise from ₦27,500 to ₦50,000 on hold.

According to the ministry, the initial proposal was driven by mounting costs associated with conducting credible national examinations, including expenses related to logistics, security, printing, technology deployment and quality assurance.

However, Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa directed that the review process be suspended to ensure a more transparent and inclusive approach to policymaking.

The ministry said discussions will now be held with examination bodies, state education ministries, school owners, parents’ groups, organised labour and other key stakeholders before any decision is taken. It added that no new examination fee will take effect until the consultation process is completed, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting students’ interests and preserving equitable access to quality education.
