Adeleke Seeks Visa Ban, Sanctions Against Osun Opposition Leaders

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for visa bans and economic sanctions against politicians and security officials found to be sponsoring political violence ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke made the appeal while receiving a British Government delegation on a pre-election peace-building mission to the state.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor accused opposition figures of encouraging violence that has resulted in killings and gun attacks ahead of the governorship poll.

He maintained that anyone found sponsoring or enabling political violence should face consequences, regardless of political affiliation.

“I have zero tolerance for violence. I have told the Inspector General of Police that if my son is involved, he should be arrested,” Adeleke said, adding that security agencies should apprehend anyone linked to violent acts.

The governor alleged that five members of the Accord Party had been killed and 15 others injured since the start of the 2026 governorship campaign, blaming the attacks on suspected opposition supporters.

He called for thorough investigations and prosecution of those responsible, insisting that elections should not be marked by bloodshed.

The British delegation, led by Senior Political Adviser Wale Adebajo, said the visit was part of efforts to promote peaceful, credible and transparent elections in Osun. 

The delegation pledged continued engagement with stakeholders before, during and after the August 15 governorship election.
