The Federal Government has advanced plans to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector with the validation of a 10-year Agrifood System Strategy and Action Plan aimed at accelerating food security, increasing agricultural investments and driving economic growth.
The strategy, which covers the period 2026 to 2035, is designed to guide Nigeria’s implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme Kampala Declaration and strengthen the country’s agrifood system over the next decade.
Speaking at the national validation meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, described the exercise as a major milestone in the Federal Government’s drive to build a resilient, inclusive and competitive agricultural sector capable of guaranteeing food security and stimulating economic growth.
Kyari said the strategy provides a clear roadmap for implementing agricultural reforms, attracting investments and improving coordination among stakeholders.
“The Strategy provides a clear implementation framework that will guide agricultural investments, strengthen collaboration across all tiers of government, improve accountability and ensure that interventions deliver measurable outcomes for farmers and other actors along the agricultural value chain,” the minister said.
He urged participants to make meaningful contributions to the validation process, stressing that broad national ownership of the strategy would be crucial to achieving the objectives of the Kampala Declaration and positioning agriculture as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic development.
According to the minister, the initiative underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening food systems and delivering sustainable agricultural growth through coordinated planning and effective implementation.
The validation meeting attracted representatives of the Federal and State Governments, development partners, private sector operators, research institutions and farmer organisations, who reviewed the draft Strategy and Action Plan ahead of its final adoption.
