Broos Reveals Why Bafana Fell To Canada

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has blamed his side’s lack of physicality for their FIFA World Cup exit, admitting Bafana Bafana could not match Canada’s pace and power in their last-32 defeat.

The 74-year-old Belgian made the remarks after South Africa suffered a dramatic 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on Sunday, with Stephen Eustaquio scoring a stoppage-time winner to seal the hosts’ place in the round of 16.

Reflecting on the defeat, Broos said modern football demands more than technical ability.

“I have said many times that modern football is more than just technique. There is power and speed, and we do not have it in our team yet. Canada had those qualities,” he said.

Broos, who had earlier announced plans to retire after the World Cup, also hinted he could rethink that decision.

“It is not clever to make decisions when you are disappointed, so I will not do it here,” he said.

The veteran coach has transformed South Africa since taking charge in 2021, leading the team to their first World Cup appearance in 16 years and their first-ever place in the knockout stage.

Reports suggest the South African Football Association may retain Broos in either a coaching or technical role. South Africa will now shift focus to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where they have been drawn alongside Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea.
