Fayose: I Won’t Retract Comments on Makinde’s Security Handling

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has defended his criticism of Governor Seyi Makinde, insisting the Oyo State government failed to act proactively to tackle insecurity.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News, Fayose argued that although the Federal Government supports security operations, governors have the responsibility to coordinate security efforts, mobilise intelligence and respond swiftly to threats within their states.

He said the recent kidnapping incidents around Ogbomoso underscored the need for a more proactive approach.

“I stand by everything I’ve said before now. I don’t shy away from them. There’s still a lot to be desired of the government for Oyo State,” Fayose said.

The former governor also alleged that kidnapping had become commercialised in parts of the country, claiming that in some cases public officials and even relatives of victims were involved in orchestrating abductions for financial gain.

Drawing from his experience as governor, Fayose said he enforced strict anti-open grazing measures, including restrictions on the movement of cattle at night, to improve security, insisting state governments have the capacity to implement policies that protect lives and property.

He also defended his earlier comments on the installation of traditional rulers in Oyo State, maintaining that he had no reason to withdraw them and stressing that public office holders should be open to criticism.
