PDP Dismisses Wike Defection Speculation, Says He’s Only ‘On Loan’ To APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday dismissed speculation that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that his appointment in President Bola Tinubu’s administration does not amount to a change in political allegiance.

Reacting to recent commendation of Wike by APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the PDP described the former Rivers State governor as one of its most valuable political assets and likened his role in the APC-led government to a “loan arrangement” without a transfer clause.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the party said the APC should not interpret Wike’s ministerial position as a sign of an imminent defection.

“His service in the current APC-led administration should not be misconstrued as a change of political allegiance. It does not alter his political identity, nor does it diminish his longstanding loyalty and contributions to the PDP,” the statement read.

The PDP attributed the attention Wike continues to attract across party lines to his performance in the FCT, citing infrastructure development, urban renewal and governance reforms. It added that the commendation from the APC chairman reflects the quality of leadership within the opposition party.

The party also urged Nigerians to return the PDP to power in 2027, arguing that it has many leaders capable of delivering effective governance if given the opportunity.
