The Federal Government has approved the renaming of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna in honour of the late elder statesman, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
The institution will now be known as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, following a presidential directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement was made by the management of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), which described the move as a strategic institutional rebranding aimed at preserving the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.
According to the management, the renaming is intended to honour General Yar’Adua’s contributions to national unity, leadership and Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
“This historic renaming honours the enduring legacy of the late statesman, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, celebrating his profound contributions to national unity and the democratic journey of Nigeria,” the statement said.
Despite the change in name, PTDF assured stakeholders that the institution’s core mandate remains unchanged.
The university will continue to focus on advanced research, specialised training and the development of engineering technology solutions for Nigeria’s oil, gas and renewable energy sectors.
The management also stressed that all academic programmes, international collaborations, research partnerships and administrative operations would continue seamlessly under the institution’s new identity.
The renaming marks a significant milestone for the Kaduna-based institution, which was established to serve as a centre of excellence for petroleum, energy and engineering studies, while further cementing the legacy of the late General Yar’Adua in Nigeria’s educational and national development landscape.
The development is expected to attract renewed attention to the institution’s role in producing highly skilled manpower and driving innovation for the country’s evolving energy sector.
