Why Tinubu Granted Customs CG Adeniyi Final Six Months Tenure Extension – Presidency

• Move Aimed At Sustaining Key Reforms, Ensuring Smooth Leadership Transition

President Bola Tinubu has extended the tenure of Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, by six months in a move aimed at sustaining key reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service and ensuring a smooth leadership transition.

The extension, described as Adeniyi’s final tenure renewal, will now keep him in office until February 2027. His previous extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026.

The Presidency said the additional six months would allow the Customs boss to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project, a flagship trade facilitation initiative designed to streamline import and export processes, boost revenue collection, and enhance ease of doing business in Nigeria.

The extension is also expected to provide room for an orderly succession process within the service.

During the transition period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and ensure the retirement of personnel who have reached the mandatory age limit of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi, a seasoned customs officer, has spent nearly four decades in the service after joining shortly after graduating from the Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.

His rise through the ranks saw him become Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023 before President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

The latest extension signals the administration’s confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership as the Customs Service pursues critical reforms and prepares for a new phase of leadership after his exit in early 2027.
