Rivers State Police Command have warned all its officers participating in the enforcement of the use of an unauthorized number plate and use of other obscured items to carry out their duties professionally, lawfully, and with utmost respect for the rights of citizens.
In a Press Statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday by ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer the Command said the exercise must not under any circumstance, be used as a means of harassment, intimidation or extortion of members of the public warning that any officer found engaging in unprofessional conduct or extortion will face strict disciplinary action.
The statement added that the Rivers State Police Command, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu is aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security and denying criminal elements the opportunity to conceal their identities and unlawful activities.
Agabe noted that the exercise against vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorized, defaced or no registration number plates have commenced all over the State.
“The enforcement exercise commenced on Monday, 15th June, 2026. The operation will be led by the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, who has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the State to commence immediate enforcement of the directive and ensure full compliance within their respective Areas of Responsibility.
“The Commissioner of Police further directed that any vehicle found violating the directive will be impounded, while offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.
“The Command therefore urges all vehicle owners and motorists in Rivers State to ensure that their registration number plates are properly affixed, clearly visible and free from any form of obstruction or alteration in order to avoid arrest, impoundment of vehicles or prosecution.
“Furthermore, all officers participating in the enforcement exercise are sternly warned to carry out their duties professionally, lawfully, and with utmost respect for the rights of citizens. The exercise must not under any circumstance, be used as a means of harassment, intimidation or extortion of members of the public. Any officer found engaging in unprofessional conduct or extortion will face strict disciplinary action.,” the statement added.
She said that the Rivers State Police Command remains committed to maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, and sustaining proactive measures aimed at improving public safety across the State.
