Adichie Accuses Lagos Hospital Of Cover-Up In Son’s Death

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a Lagos-based hospital of attempting to cover up the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son.

In a public letter addressed to the hospital’s board chairman, Adichie alleged negligence and inconsistencies in the medical care that preceded her son’s death, as well as efforts to obstruct the coroner’s inquest.

Her son died on January 7, 2026, following complications during a medical sedation procedure. The case has since triggered legal proceedings, with the hospital challenging the jurisdiction of the Coroner’s Court while investigations continue.

Adichie claimed that hospital officials initially acknowledged possible errors and promised to release full medical records, but she said the documents provided were incomplete and conflicting in key details.

She further alleged that the hospital attempted to delay or frustrate the inquest process through legal action, describing the situation as prolonging her family’s grief.

As of the time of filing this report, the hospital has not publicly responded to her latest allegations.
