FAAN Reaffirms Commitment To Green Airports, Climate Action On World Environment Day

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to climate action, sustainable airport operations, and the promotion of a greener aviation industry as part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026.

In a statement released on Thursday, the agency said it is intensifying efforts to reduce carbon emissions across Nigeria’s airports while pursuing global environmental standards and certifications aimed at enhancing sustainability in the aviation sector.

FAAN noted that its environmental initiatives are focused on building safer, more efficient and climate-resilient airports capable of meeting growing aviation demands without compromising environmental protection.

According to the authority, ongoing measures include carbon emission reduction programmes, adoption of sustainable operational practices and alignment with international environmental best practices.

The agency stressed that environmental sustainability remains a key component of its long-term strategy for airport development and management.

“FAAN marked World Environment Day 2026 with a renewed commitment to climate action, sustainable airport operations and a greener aviation industry,” the statement said.

The authority added that it would continue to pursue initiatives that support environmental conservation while ensuring safe and efficient airport services for passengers and stakeholders.

FAAN also called on Nigerians and members of the aviation community to support collective efforts aimed at protecting the environment and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

World Environment Day is observed annually to raise awareness and encourage action on critical environmental issues, including climate change, pollution and biodiversity conservation.
