Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, reportedly collapsed on Thursday after police dispersed Democracy Day protesters at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

The incident occurred during a demonstration against insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance, as security operatives moved to break up the gathering with tear gas.

Witnesses said Sowore fell during the confrontation, triggering panic among protesters and supporters at the venue.

He was subsequently taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.

The protest was one of several activities held in the Federal Capital Territory to mark Democracy Day, with demonstrators calling for improved governance and economic conditions.

Police had earlier deployed tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd, forcing protesters and journalists covering the event to flee the area.

Authorities had yet to officially comment on Sowore’s condition as of the time of filing this report.
