Three Red Cards In Opening Game, 2026 World Cup Roars To Explosive Start

The 2026 FIFA World Cup burst into life in dramatic fashion on Thursday night as co-hosts Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in a fiery opening match that produced three red cards, setting an explosive tone for the biggest tournament in football history. 

A packed crowd at the iconic Estadio Azteca witnessed a chaotic encounter that saw Mexico secure all three points while both teams finished the match with reduced numbers. The game became the first World Cup opening fixture ever to feature three dismissals — more red cards than goals.
