In a massive show of political strength and solidarity, the people of Enugu East Senatorial District on Saturday threw their weight behind President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah, endorsing both leaders for a second term in office and pledging overwhelming support in the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement came at the Ofu Obi Mega Rally held at the Okpara Square, Enugu, an event widely described by participants as one of the largest political gatherings witnessed in the state in recent years.

The rally, which attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, federal appointees and thousands of supporters from across the state, also witnessed the donation of ₦300 million towards Governor Mbah’s re-election campaign and the presentation of the revered Ofo staff — a traditional symbol of authority, justice and legitimacy — by royal fathers from the zone.

Leaders of the Nkanu clan said their endorsement was driven by what they described as the visible transformation taking place across Enugu State under Mbah’s administration, as well as the benefits accruing to the state from its relationship with the Federal Government under President Tinubu.

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, said the achievements recorded by the governor across critical sectors had earned him the confidence and admiration of the people.

“Across all sectors, the evidence of transformational leadership is speaking louder than propaganda.

The people can see the difference and testify that Enugu State is moving forward with confidence and speed,” he declared.

In one of the rally’s most politically charged moments, former President of the Senate, Senator Ken Nnamani, declared that Governor Mbah remained the only credible candidate for the governorship race in 2027, warning against entrusting the state to individuals lacking integrity or vision.

Nnamani praised Mbah’s leadership style, describing him as a visionary leader rich in ideas and strategy, while insisting that those with questionable records should not aspire to lead the state.

“As far as I can see, we have only one candidate who is running for governor, and that is Governor Peter Mbah.

We will not use the governorship seat to try our luck,” he stated.

Also speaking, elder statesman and former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, urged political stakeholders across party lines to support Mbah’s second-term bid, citing what he described as the governor’s outstanding performance.

According to him, Mbah’s achievements have transcended partisan politics and earned him broad-based support across the state.

Adding a federal dimension to the rally, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, accompanied by the Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, said the partnership between the Enugu State Government and the Tinubu administration had delivered tangible benefits to the people.

He commended both leaders for what he described as bold and inclusive governance policies that have positively impacted Enugu State and the South-East region.

Responding to the endorsement, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the people for believing in his vision in 2023 when many of the projects now visible across the state existed only as plans.

The governor highlighted key achievements of his administration, including the construction of Smart Green Schools in every ward, expanded access to healthcare, road infrastructure development, improved water supply, modern transport terminals, the launch of Enugu Air and increased investor interest in the state.

In a major announcement, Mbah disclosed that work would soon commence on a 660-megawatt coal-fired power plant aimed at addressing the state’s electricity challenges and driving industrial growth.

“A few days from now, we will break ground on a 660MW coal-fired power plant that moves us closer to a future where our people no longer plan their lives around darkness. In a literal sense, the lights will go on in Enugu permanently,” he said.

The governor also applauded President Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying the administration’s difficult but necessary decisions had strengthened the capacity of states to deliver development projects and improve the lives of citizens.

While urging residents to remain patient and supportive, Mbah warned against what he described as political opportunists seeking to distract the state from its development trajectory.

“Several months from now, we will face another general election. Political cowboys will surface. Some will bring noise, some will bring anger, some will bring division.

We will bring results. Our answer must be unity. Our answer must be the work,” he declared. The rally also featured remarks from the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Dr. Ben Nwoye, Senator Kelvin Chukwu, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji, Hon. Iloabuchi Aniagu, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, Sydney Edeh and Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, all of whom reaffirmed support for the governor’s administration.

Saturday’s gathering not only underscored Governor Mbah’s growing political influence within Enugu State but also signalled an emerging alliance of political and traditional stakeholders determined to sustain the state’s current development agenda and strengthen its relationship with the Federal Government ahead of the 2027 elections.
